Haleem the flavour of Ramzan...

I know no one in Hyderabad will be left with out tasting Haleem in this holy month of Ramzan!

Off course Haleem is the flavor of month & popularity of haleem in Hyderabad for die hard fans of it. Traditional haleem is a type of stew made from pounded wheat and mutton, cooked for over ten hours in a bhatti and served with the garnishing of ghee, coriander and fried onions. The preparation of haleem is an art mastered overtime and practice!

I like to go to Pista House, Charminar for tasting haleem & like it very much for its taste and quality. Actually this is higly nutrioned food. This time in Hyderabad appart from traditional haleem (mutton) there was also chicken, fish and Vegetable haleem (use dry fuits and vegetables) for haleem lovers in city. Irani haleem has also clicked its popularity!

Charminar in the Time of Ramzan

As the sun sets in Hyderabad, the Old City begins to wear a different look.  Against the background of the majestic Charminar, sirens resonate announcing the sighting of the Moon, the arrival of the holy month of Ramzan, a time for self- purification, devotion and penance; a time to observe the month-long fast (Roza) in anticipation of the New Year and Id-Ul-Fitr. The siren also announces the breaking of the fast with the commencement of Iftar and the Azan for the special Taraweeh Namaz.

In this holy month, the streets of the iconicCharminar are all decked up. The much talked about Lad Bazaar is like a labyrinth - heavily crowded with the burkha-clad Muslim women, chic college girls and the blushing Lambadinis dressed in their traditional finery. The street echoes with the calls of pavement vendors selling everything from bangles and hair-pins to trousers and caps.

Bargaining at the stores is a normal practice but since everyone wants a piece of the pie, it is a sellers’ market and prices are hard to get down. Though otherwise commercial establishments are to be shut down by 10 PM and eateries by 11 PM, during Ramzan, the rules are relaxed. The hustle and bustle reaches its crescendo at 2 AM when all the activity is at its peak.

Right from the stretch of Pathergatti leading up to Barkas, Charminar and its surrounding areas are all lit up. The streets are lined up with attar sellers, chudiwalas, and of course the Haleem stalls. All the restaurants on the Pathergatti stretch are open every night and the street is lit up by strong halogen bulbs.

Though Ramzan is the month of fasting and penance, once the Iftar siren is heard, the variety of food available on the streets is mind boggling. All the restaurants serve feasts fit for the kings and all grocery stores stock the most delicious of dates from Saudi Arabia. Though rare, the dates from Bateel are the most aristocratic possession during Ramzan.

The best time to visit Charminar is a day before the Jumaat-Ul-Vida or Alvida – Jumma (last Friday of Ramzan) as everything is at its best - discounts, offers, style, lights and décor.

Ramadan Mubarak ..

Fasting..

Since Ramadan has approached us it is important for us to know how your fast can be broken.  It does not take much to break your fast, you can miss a daily prayer or you can tell a lie. no matter what this month is sacred you should take this chance to forgive your sins.

Any of the following invalidates the fast:
  • eating or drinking,
  • sexual intercourse,
  • telling lies about Allah and or His Messenger (pbuh),
  • immersing the entire head in water,
  • deliberate inhalation of smoke,
  • remaining in the state of janabah (uncleanliness due to seminal discharge) till dawn,
  • masturbating,
  • taking injections whereby nourishing liquids reach the stomach,
  • deliberate vomiting, intention- ally passing an object through the throat or any other natural opening… Travelling, that is, going from your place of residence to a place situated at least eight farasikh (about twenty-seven and a half miles, or fifty miles according to some scholars) requires you to break your fast and to make up for it later on in equal number of days missed.
Deliberately breaking the fast requires a kaffara (atonement) which is either the feeding of sixty poor persons, or fasting for sixty consecutive days for each day missed. If the fast is broken acciden- tally, qaza (making up) suffices. Every adult and mentally sound male or female Muslim is required to fast starting twenty minutes before dawn and till sunset. Al-Majlisi, on p. 352, Vol. 94, of his Bihar al- Anwar, cites a number of Shi’ a scholars saying that they heard Imam Abu Ja’fer al-Baqir (as) saying, “Telling lies breaks the fast, and so does a second look at another woman, in addition to oppression, be it little or much.”
One who misses fasting a number of days during the month of Ramadan due to travelling, forgetfulness, ignorance of the fact that those days were the days of the month of Ramadan, sickness, menstruation or childbirth, are required to make up in equal number of days missed. Those who suffered from temporary insanity or who faint before having the chance to make the intention to fast, those who are afflicted with an ailment which causes them to be constantly thirsty and have no hope of healing, or because of old age that renders them feeble, do not have to make it up, nor do they have to offer kaffara, atonement. One who falls sick during the month of Ramadan and a year passes before being able to fully recover is, of course, not required to make up but to pay the compensation which is providing the needy and deserving poor, or providing one such person, with three quarters of a kilogram of food for each day missed. If one’s father dies owing either prayers or fast, his oldest son is required to make up on his father’s behalf, but a son is not required to make up on behalf of his deceased mother.
Fast is not accepted without the five daily prayers. Exempted from the fast are children, the mentally retarded, and old rnen and women who find it too hard to observe. If they can fast in other months to make up, it will be best for them. If they cannot make up, then they do not have to offer kaffara either. Women during their menstrual period are not only exempted from fasting, they are forbidden from fasting, but they will have to make it up later on. As soon as their period ends, they must take their ghusul (ceremonial bath) and resume the fast. Women breast-feeding their infants and whose natural milk is not sufficient, as well as women during their prenatal period, may break their fast if it harms their infants. They, too, have to make up for the fast.

Ramadan

Charminar is all set and Ready for the Up coming and Precious Festival of Muslims – Ramadan (Ramzan). People at Charminar celebrate Ramzan very favorably.  The roads are all packed up with the shoppers and business people. Lots of Bangles, kurta’s and caps are Very hot going products near by Charminar these days.

Ramadan is the holiest of months in the Islamic calendar. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The month is spent by Muslims fasting during the daylight hours from dawn to sunset.

While fasting is an integral and paramount part of it, Ramadan offers a comprehensive program for our spiritual overhaul. The entire program required the peace and security that was offered by Madinah.

“Anyone who fasts during this month with purity of belief and with expectation of a good reward (from his Creator), will have his previous sins forgiven,” said Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. “Anyone who stands in prayers during its nights with purity of belief and expectation of a reward, will have his previous sins forgiven.” As other ahadith tell us, the rewards for good deeds are multiplied manifold during Ramadan.

Through direct Ibada we “charge our batteries”; the indirect ones allow us to use the power so accumulated in driving the vehicle of our life. Ramadan is the month for rebuilding our spiritual strength. How much we benefit from it is up to us.
